Devotional:
Growing up, I used to be that student in class that was nervous to ever ask any questions. For some odd reason, I felt that somehow the teacher expected me to already know and understand everything. Can anyone else relate? When I got to college however, something changed. With more on the line (loans lol), I didn't care how many questions I had to ask. I was going to get my thousands of dollars worth, period!
When you look up the meaning of a teacher in the Merriam-Webster dictionary, it simply says one that teaches. Well, what does it mean to teach? To show or explain to someone how to do something. Those moments I wouldn't ask my teacher questions was only holding them back from the very occupation they held. In efforts to appear more wise I was only operating in pure stupidity lol. How many of us do this in our walk with God?
We have to be careful to not form these strongholds concerning God's expectations of us. He literally wants us to seek Him when we don't understand. Recall Jeremiah 33:3 , where it says that if we call out to God, He will tell us great and unsearchable things that we don't know. The knowledge of God is so deep! There is no way He expects us to have it all together on our own. Many of you are void of understanding because you ask not.
Strip yourself of the pride and put on your cloak of humility. Approach the throne of grace boldly and confidently, seeking to be taught and watch the ways in which God expands your understanding. Scripture tells us that those who are wise listen to advice and accept instruction. (Proverbs 19:20)
In the end, will you be counted as wise or as foolish? The decision is up to you.
Prayer: Recite the prayer below.
Dear Lord my Heavenly Father, I come before you repenting for my ignorance. Instead of seeking you for the answers I needed, I sought other means. Father, forgive me and renew my mind. I pray you lead me into greater understanding concerning the things I don't know. Teach me your precepts and continually guide my path towards one of full surrender and obedience. Remove any pride from within me and search my heart to reveal those things lurking in the shadows that only feed it. Deliver me and take me under your mighty wing.
In Jesus name, I pray, Amen...
Scripture(s) Meditation:
“Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.””
Luke 11:1 NKJV
““Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.”
Matthew 7:7-8 NKJV
Reflection Question(s): We invite you to discuss below.
Where in your youth was asking questions rejected? What has kept you from asking God for the understanding you so desperately need? How will you change your perception concerning this?
