Devotional:
"Hopped up out the bed, turn my swag on. Took a look in the mirror, said, "What's up?" (Turn my Swag on by Soulja Boy) When I was a kid, I used to love this song. But as I got older I started to notice something a little bit more serious concerning this song that I could relate to. When I was in the world just living, I hopped out my bed each day and turned something else on. Anxiety, stress, emotions and anything else toxic I could get my hands on. Here I thought I had swag, but all it really was, was sad. Now you know that was funny lol.
But as I drew closer to God, I began to notice the importance of that first five minutes of waking up. Whatever I chose to turn on within those first five minutes literally set the pace for my entire day. It even took me a while to realize I had a choice. That I didn't always have to side with my emotions and could instead choose the truth and knowledge of God. (2 Corinthians 10:4-5)
If you find yourself having a bad day or things not going well, I want you to take a few steps backwards. What did you turn on that morning? I can almost guarantee you that whatever you turned on was indeed the root cause of the day you had. Sometimes it's not what happens in our day but what happened at the start of it.
Scripture(s) Meditation:
“Therefore, I say this and testify in the Lord: You should no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thoughts.”
Ephesians 4:17 CSB
“Put on the full armor of God so that you can stand against the schemes of the devil.”
Ephesians 6:11 CSB
Reflection Question(s): We invite you to discuss below.
What is your normal routine in the morning? What starts the first five minutes of your day? Does those first five minutes currently help you or cause hindrances for you? What will your new five minute routine be? What will you decide to "put on" each morning?
